In this post, we’ll explore some North Alabama destinations where movies have been filmed and how you can visit these cinematic spots on your next adventure.

1. Cathedral Caverns State Park and the Town of Mooresville – "Tom and Huck"

Nestled in Woodville, Cathedral Caverns is a stunning state park known for its massive entrance and awe-inspiring formations inside the cave. This natural wonder drew Hollywood’s attention and was featured in the 1995 film Tom and Huck, starring Jonathan Taylor Thomas. The cave’s mysterious atmosphere made it a perfect fit for the film’s adventurous scenes.

When you visit Cathedral Caverns State Park, take the guided cave tour to see the famous Goliath formation, one of the largest stalagmites in the world. Beyond the cave, the park offers hiking trails and picnic spots, making it a perfect destination for both nature lovers and movie buffs alike.

When you visit Mooresville, you'll see why they chose this quaint little village for the backdrop. Visit 1818 Farms and other places like Dogwood & Magnolia Bakery, Lyla's Little House, and Mooresville Merchantile.

2. Huntsville – "SpaceCamp"

Huntsville is widely known as "The Rocket City" due to its deep ties to the U.S. space program, so it’s no surprise that it served as the filming location for the 1986 film SpaceCamp. This classic sci-fi adventure movie was shot at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, one of the top attractions in North Alabama.

You can visit the very place where the young protagonists of the film embarked on their journey to space. At the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, you’ll find interactive exhibits, real spacecraft, and the Saturn V Rocket. Whether you’re a fan of the film or fascinated by space exploration, this spot is a must-see.

3. Tuscumbia – "The Miracle Worker"

Tuscumbia, a quaint town in North Alabama, is not only known for its history but also for its connection to The Miracle Worker. The film, based on the life of Helen Keller, was partially filmed in the area, as it’s the hometown of Keller herself. In fact, the Keller family home, Ivy Green, is one of the most famous landmarks in Tuscumbia.

A visit to Ivy Green allows you to explore the home and gardens where Helen Keller grew up. The site also hosts an annual outdoor play reenacting Keller’s life and her relationship with her teacher, Anne Sullivan. This location is not only significant for its cinematic history but also as a tribute to one of the most inspiring figures of the 20th century.
